Dan's been with the Calley Homes team for just over five years. He began his building career after spending a year at university. Turning his hand to a building apprenticeship here at Calley Homes in Tauranga, Dan has now progressed to Site Manager.
Use five words to describe yourself?
I’m a perfectionist and take pride in the work that I do. I’m hard working and have a good work ethic by being punctual and sticking to time schedules well.
How long have you been with Calley Homes?
About 5.5 years
Why did you decide to work in the building industry?
I went to uni for a year and decided that wasn’t for me so when I was given the opportunity to try my hand at building I jumped at that and loved it.
What do you love about what you do?
Standing back at the end of the day and being proud of the builds you’ve completed.
What has been your highlight since joining Calley Homes?
It’s hard to pinpoint just one. I feel very privileged to be part of a team that builds these amazing multimillion dollar homes and each home has it’s one unique amazing aspects.
What do you think you bring to the team?
I’m quite particular with detailing and all the finishing work. I like to make sure things are done right by taking the extra time if need be.
If we asked your team mates to describe you what would they say?
I think they’d say I’m quite humble and set a good example with work ethic.
If you were caught singing in your work ute what tune would it be?
A bit of Six60 or MaiFM
What do you do to wind down from a busy week?
We live in a beautiful place here in Tauranga so getting outdoors for some golf, fishing or bike rides.
In your opinion what’s worth spending more on to get the best?
The finishing details is what the client will see at the end of the day so make sure those are perfect. In saying that, having a solid foundation will make the finishing that much better.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Trust your gut and your abilities. Don’t second guess yourself.
How has your career progressed with Calley Homes?
I started off as an apprentice and am now a foreman. There is still a lot to learn and I'm growing my knowledge every day.
What do you love about the Calley homes team?
They are an awesome team to work with. It’s very family orientated and everyone wants to help each other. It’s a good buzz to be around.
What advice would you give to someone looking to get into building as a career? When you decide you want to be a builder, get your apprentice done without stalling. Stick it out because it’s well worth it. Knuckle down and get the paperwork done.
